This important day provides an opportunity to better know and understand Africa, that the word "Africa" is not synonymous with the word "problem". When we think about Africa, in the imagination there are problems of economic, social, security nature. But the African continent, which has an area of about 30 million square kilometers, nearly one billion inhabitants, has huge natural and human potential. This potential could enable the continent to overcome all the problems of development," Ambassador of Morocco to Ukraine Abdeljalil Saubry said.

Moldova, Belarus & Ukraine

Your Excellencies, Mr. Asante-Yeboa, President of the African Center in Ukraine,  distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen
On behalf of UNHCR I wish to express my thanks to the African Center for having organised this event and for the invitation extended to UNHCR.
Today we commemorate the founding, 48 years ago, in 1963, of the Organisation of African Unity, which in 2002 becomne the present African Union. Since then, May 25th has become a celebrated day for all Africans.

30 of the then 32 independent African states gathered to sign the Organisation's founding charter in Addis Ababa. Decolonisation was nearing its end. African leaders made a commitment to work together towards a brighter future for the whole of their continent. Today the Africa Union is composed of 53 countries.

Etey Sene (Twi – Ghanaian dialect)! Jambo (Kiswahili)! Marhaba (Arabic)!

I fell in love with Africa when I visited the continent for the first time, on a trip to Cameroon for New Years 2000, over a decade ago. I knew when I left the continent after two short weeks that I had left a piece of my heart in Africa and that I would return.

Since then, I have been lucky enough to live and work and visit African countries as diverse as Ghana, Togo, Gabon, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Benin, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mali and Mauritania.

Just like me, my country, the United States, also maintains very strong ties with Africa.

AFRICA DAY 2011 ROUNDTABLE
THEME: THE ROLE OF THE AFRICAN DIASPORA YOUTH IN EUROPE TOWARDS THE DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICA
TERNOPIL NATIONAL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, TERNOPIL
28 May 2011

Speech delivered by Charles Asante-Yeboa
President of African Center

Ambassador of Nigeria to Ukraine H. E. Mr. Ibrahim Pada Kasai

Charles Asante-Yeboa
President, African Center

I am happy to be here today to join you to celebrate the Africa Day. As you know, the Africa Day is the annual commemoration on May 25 of the 1963 founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). On this day, leaders of 30 of the 32 independent African states signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In 2002 the OAU established the African Union as its own successor. The Africa Day has since been a celebration of African unity and progress.

The African continent has registered some progress since the era of our predecessors, Kwame Nkrumah and his contemporaries - I mean those who fought to regain independence for the various African communities. However, some fifty years after regaining independence, African countries have not yet achieved the liberty, unity, progress and development envisaged by their concerned forefathers.
